The only German who believed this was Hitler, based on the fact that Calais is the closest part of France to Britain. Rommel wanted to deploy the entire armoured reserve very close to the Normandy beaches from Spring 1944, but Hitler refused to let him. Rommel wasn't at all fooled by Operation Fortitude,the Allied deception plan to make the Germans think that Calais would be the invasion site.
