Question:

attention auto mechanics i need help?

i have a 2001 ford ranger and the check engine light came on this morning and it stays on. the truck doesn‘t seem to be running abnormally and i haven‘t noticed any drop in performance. what could it be?

Answer:

Could be any number of things. It could even mean your gas cap isn't closed all the way. Go to an auto parts store and get them to check the code - they can tell you exactly what it refers to.
based on my experienc: petrol engine: Could be some problems with the egr valve, this is not dangerouse for the engine. you need to check it out anyway. Diesel engine: Could be numeros errors, check it out. ASAP.
It means one of the many circuits the computer monitors is returning a value outside the range it expects to see. It means you should ask your mechanic to scan the vehicle and tell you what codes are causing the check engine light to come on, and what he recommends to fix it. Some is bound to tell you to go to some auto parts store and get a free reading. The only reason they do that is to sell you parts, and the answer you get is only as good as the kid on the counter at the moment. They will also tell you just disconnect your battery and it will reset. DON'T. If will just come back if the problem isn't fixed, and it may set your security system to the point where your vehicle won't start and will need to towed to the dealer for repairs. Even if that doesn't happen, you will still have to reset your clock and favorite radio stations, providing your stereo even works after that.
