Question:

Austin Mini with super-wide axles?

I saw an Austin Mini at an autoshop today with super super wide axles- the wheels are set fully outside the fenders. The interior is partially gutted but not set up for rallying, and it doesn‘t have any extra badges or stickers on it. What on earth are the wide axles for?

Answer:

I take it we talking an old style (Leyland- Austin?) Mini not the later (BMW) type Mini? Mini's do not have axles. One of the tricks with the old Mini's was to fit 'wheel spacers' - extended studs with, what is basically a large 'washer' between wheel and brake drum, popular with the boy-racer brigade, looked pretty good with wider wheels and extended arches but put huge extra strain on wheel bearings. A Rally prepared Mini would NOT use wheel spacers.
Hi so the suspension would need uprating as it would be very soft with the standard suspension as extending the wheels out further has this effect.
The only one I know of (I'm not sure about Canada, but.) is Osvaldo Brand Apple Juice. If I remember right, it's also sparkling, but I'm not totally sure. Hope this helps!
wider stance faster turns it won't be street legal though.
