ANYONE KNOW HOW TO IDENTIFY THE AXLES ON MY TRUCK? I DO NOT KNOW IF THEY ARE THE ORIGIONALI bought a 1977 Chevy Stepside with a 350 (5.7) around a year ago and need to replace the axle U joint on the drivers side with the appropriate parts. Truck is used as a 4x4 mud runner.Any help would be fantastic, thanks so much in advance!
There is a tag on one of the bolts on the back of the Diff it iwll tell you what it is and what the gear ratio is. Unless it has been changed and then you have to take off the cover and count the Ring gear teeth.It is probly a Corp. 10 bolt . So if it has 10 bolts on the rear cover then so on and so forth for a 12 bolt and a 14 bolt but usally in 3/4 ton trucks. Take the U-joint with you to the parts store and it prably be a 3510 U-joint which is most half tons.
Axles usually have a small metal tag affixed to one of the cover bolts that may help identify it or you can lok for a series of numbers and letters stamped into the axle tubes. Easiest way is to remove the u-joint and take it along to match up to a new one. count the number of bolts on the axle cover and make a rough sketch of the outline of it too to help determine what style axle is in the truck. A half-ton truck could have a few different ones and it's easiest to just go by the cover bolt pattern and shapeCorporate and Dana axles have distinctive bolt patterns and shapes. I also recommend going with special, heavy duty u-joints that have grease fittings in the cap rather than in the neck of the joint to eliminate a stress point for heavy use. Stores that cater to off-roaders or plow equipment carry them if regular stores don't. If you can't find one like that, make sure to install a regular style u-joint so that the grease fitting neck is under compression during forward motion.
