Is there any kind of biodegradable plastic? And if so, how long does it take for it to break down?
Plastics are long complex organic molecules so by definition they do biodegrade but very very slowly. Bacteria have been evolving to consume more plastics as plastics are becoming more common in certain environments. Before we had plastics from petrochemicals, we made them from vegetables, from cellulose, you may have heard of cellophane, these biodegrade faster than petrochemical plastics because bacteria are already accustomed to consuming cellulose. Recently, we've been making plastic out of corn starch basically for green washing marketing. However, if something biodegrades, their carbon are released into the atmosphere as CO2 which with our global warming concerns would not be good for the environment. What most people believe is good for the environment often isn't.
