You mean like Na + HOH --> NaOH + 1/2 H2? That's a base, my friend.
Most likely when a metal is placed into water it is going to form a metal oxide (M(OH)x) - where M stands for the metal and x is the number of hydroxide ions based on the metal's oxidation state - and hydrogen, either H or H2, H2 is hydrogen gas. For example: Mg + 2H20 -> Mg(OH)2 + H2 Ca + 2H20 -> Ca(OH)2 + H2 K + H20 -> KOH + 1/2H2 The reaction with a metal with 2+ oxidation state is rather vigorous and produces the rapid evolution of hydrogen gas (H2). I hope this makes sense and answers your question. Feel free to send me a message if you need more information.
