I‘m trying to buy my first motorcycle and I‘ve found one. The owner says that it needs some work and the second gear needs to be replaced. I‘ve never heard of anything like this, and I‘m wondering if just one gear could even be replaced or does the whole tranny need to be replaced. How much work would both or either require is my main question.

I had a 400 cc that was sold to me as needing a little work. $600 later it was on the road. You can't just replace one gear in my experience. Talk to a cycle repair shop in your area about it and they can tell realistically about what the repair cost is. Find a bike that needs only surface work or maybe tires.
Listen to mullen on this one. The entire transmission does not have to be changed at the same time. There are many individual parts and gears, to many to list. The average parts to be changed for 2nd gear problems, can be up to at least 6, each costing up to $50 ($50 x 6 $300) Then the labor will be in the excess of $1500. For your first bike, buy something that works.
Avoid it. Dont get a motorcycle that needs anything more then VERY minor repair work. Get a bike that is in good running condition. The only thing thats acceptable in my opinion is something simple like the tires are getting a little bald, or fairing needs to be replaced etc
