Not particularly. It must provide the same or greater wattage, must be the same plug, and must be the same voltage. You buy one to low on wattage, it won't last long.

Not all HP chargers will be the right voltage or have the right size plug that goes into the laptop. Actually any make charger will work IF--a) correct output voltage . b) a current output rating the same or greater c) if the plug is the right size . d) A charger for a HP lap top must have a small symbol on it like a circle with a dot within it . The dot should be marked +. A charger marked - MUST NOT be used . Though these are quite rare. Example my HP laptop charger is a) 18.5 v b) 3.5A
