Question:

Can Harassment Charges be pressed............?

Can you press harassment charges on someone if you were NEVER contacted directly ? - they just posted things about you ........

Answer:

Yes. You can either use harassment or you can go the defamation route.
Thanks for the email clarifying that the charges have already been pressed--against you--for posting on the internet that your old classmate runs a brothel. I can see why that would result in criminal charges. This brings into sharp perspective your question. Yes, you can harrass someone criminally by posting false statements about their moral character on the internet. You are civilly liable too. False statements impugning the morals of your victim are per se defamation, and require no proof of damages. Sucks to be you!
Hmmm . . . harassment would be a tough sell. I would be interested to know exactly what is being posted and where it's being posted. Harassment is generally considered to be the act of systematic and/or continued unwanted and annoying actions of one party or a group, including threats and demands. The purposes may vary, including racial prejudice, personal malice, an attempt to force someone to quit a job or grant sexual favors, apply illegal pressure to collect a bill, or merely gain sadistic pleasure from making someone fearful or anxious. Depending on what this person is posting or saying you might have a better shot with defamation (which can be pursued civilly and is some cases (under specific circumstances) criminally). Any intentional false communication, either written or spoken, that harms a person's reputation; decreases the respect, regard, or confidence in which a person is held; or induces disparaging, hostile, or disagreeable opinions or feelings against a person. Defamation encompasses both posted written statements, known as libel, and spoken statements, called slander.
