I am about to make bread and the only thing I have similar to a loaf pan is a ceramic dish. It has thick sides and seems to be pretty durable (as if it was intended for cooking use). But I can‘t shake the red flag in my head telling me not to do it - any idea?

No, it is not safe to drive. It would be the same as driving a car with a broken spring. It will have a very detrimental effect on how it handles.
think about it. you know it is bad. if you get in an accident and they can prove that you knew about it. the results will not be good.
Firstly, I have several ceramic loaf 'pans' that are definitely made for cooking, and I've used them often for baking the dessert type breads (banana nut, cranberry, pumpkin, etc). never for regular bread recipes though but I'm not sure exactly what kind of bread you are making. Where was your ceramic dish stored (with other baking supplies?), or why is you you think it might not be fore baking? It most likely is okay. In fact, what other use could it have? Something shaped like a loaf pan would be used as a serving dish for anything. Ceramic can be wonderful for cooking, and they clean wonderfully, but if you're not sure if the one you have is for cooking, and you have this nagging doubt, don't take a chance. Run out to your nearest kitchen supply, or even grocery store that has a nice baking supply section.
