Other than the CO detectors there really is no other way that I know of for detecting since it is colorless, odorless.
I have 2 male dogs that I walk approximately 6 days a week. And, for the first 100 feet or so, they have to pee on each bush, tree, post, pole, mailbox, etc. that we pass. They don't need to pee that much - they just WANT to. Interestingly though, I also walk dogs at the local humane society and those dogs don't feel the urge to pee on everything - and I cannot figure out why.
One CO detector on each floor will be sufficient. The detector will activate in two situations. 1. The CO levels rise very quickly in the home due to a failure of your furnace or other heating device. 2. There is a minor CO leak and the levels in the house rise slowly over a period of time. In either case, call either the fire department or the gas company, they will come out and investigate and hopefully find the cause of the CO problem.
