Answer:

One could, theoretically speaking, detect a rabbit from Earth orbit. The question is simply how much money you want to spend on it. You wouldn't use PIR technology but much more expensive cryogenic semiconductor detectors or even bolometers but the physics limit is nowhere close to where you need/want it. So theoretically, yes. Practically this is a don't try this at home, kids kind of question. At home you could probably detect a rabbit over a km with a Peltier cooled IR camera and a large enough lens. Might be still a little too expensive for hunting rabbits, though.
You did all the right things in order to deaden the room echo and improve the sound. Now, try to point the speakers at your listening position (toe them in) and see what's different in the sound. It should sound clear and well balanced. Also, if your speakers are floorstanders, try to pull them away from any walls in order to reduce the amount of bass you are getting. Even the bookshelf speakers can benefit from not being too close to any walls, but for floorstanders, it's a must. Often, people buy speakers that are just too big for their room and then they find it very difficult to get any proper sound out of them. Placement of your speakers has a big role in adjusting for proper sound.
