Question:

Can I replace air suspension with heavy duty shocks?

My 2000 Expedition has the rear air bag suspension. One bag has a leak and is causing a major droop in the back suspension (looks like a low rider). The droop comes and goes, but is becoming more of a problem. Rather than the expense of replacing the air bags, will heavy duty or gas type shocks help the problem?

Answer:

I can't tell you specs on what kind of shocks to buy exactly, but I've been and still am the owner of 2 Lincolns with the same susp system, if you have an expedition, than look for the standardized version (probably explorer), and they can actually get the susp from a junkyard. you have a towncar that needs air system replaced, you can improvise with a crown victoria susp, a continental's system would be improvised with a ford taurus, and so on.this is straight from a mechanic who's actually done these replacements Good luck
There are specific replacement spring/shock packages available to replace the various air suspension systems. Shocks alone, even those w/helper springs, will not do.
Air vs gas. Air you can adjust, either manually or with a built in air pump. Good if you plan on towing where you need to adjust the shocks often. Bad if you want a comfortable ride. But, air shocks and air shock absorbers are the same thing, just a different name. Your normal shocks are gas shocks. You cannot adjust them, they use an oil and a gas inside of them with a valve system to provide a more comfortable ride.
