Question:

Can you be fired from your job due to sickness or disease?

My brother was recently diagnosed with Grey's disease. Over the past two years he has lost an unreal amount of weight and muscle mass. This has caused him some problems with being able to perform some job duties where he works. I told him he needs to talk to his doctor and explain what type of work he does and his inabilities to perform some job duties to see if his doctor can give him some restrictions. He works on a swine farm for a small company who fires and hires at will. This company has no HR to protect the employees and he is afraid they will try to get rid of him if tells them he can't do some of the job tasks until he gets better. Can they be held accountable by law if he were fired due to his sickness. Also, the doctor said he will get better, but it will take about 6 months for this to happen. He had to take some type of radioactive drink to kill his thyroid as part of his recovery. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:

As noted, check your MSDS sheets on ALL chemicals. We had a rising MBA in purchasing that was removing the warning labels from drums of toxic cleaning solvent. Don't trust the company. You are expendable. Use appropriate respirators when working with any sealants and cleaners. Using fans to disperse fumes just relocates them to another persons work area. That's not really acceptable. Good luck. Most aircraft mechanics don't live to retirement age. Guess why? I called OSHA about having to work in an closed hanger with gasoline powered AC power units running. I was really getting sick from the carbon monoxide. Couldn't get the company or the union to do anything. 20 years later, and 2500 miles away, at a job interview, the guy said Oh yeah. You're the guy that called OSHA on XXXX airlines We are expendable.
You are pretty much going to need to wait for him to come out or cut the hose How did he end up in the fire hose? Most people do not have fire hoses sitting around. You could force him out by very carfully sliding you foot along the hose. becareful not to step on him but pus him out that way
My manager at a job I used to work at kept bumming cigarettes off of methis was like 20 years ago, and I went to a magic shop and bought some of those Little pop sticks, that you put in the end of a cigarette to make it explode. and I gave him a cigarette with one of those jammed way inside and he was half done with the smoke, and half of the cigarette blew off. LOL It was harmless, and definitely proved my point!
