Question:

Can you get a mechanic to make the check engine light go off in your car? Mine wont pass emission test but

nothing is wrong with it other than the stupid light and the emissions people won‘t pass the car for me to get my tag because of the light.

Answer:

I'm not sure where you are located but here in Kentucky you can go to Auto Zone and they will plug in their handheld diagnostic computer into your car and will be able to tell you what the problem is and they will reset it for you for free. This only takes a few minutes. If there is a problem they will surely help you to get the part. I had an issue a few weeks ago with my check engine light they checked it for me for free and all it was, was that the most recent time I fueled I didnt tighten the gas cap enough.
Rear ones go in front and front ones go on rear on opposite sides!
If your tires are NOT directional then crisscross left rear to right front and left front to right rear. If they ARE directional then right front to right rear and left front to left rear.
The year and model of car may help, on older models.it is simple as disconnecting the battery for 15 minutes to clear the codes making the light go off. On newer models they have to reset the cars computer.which isn't hard either. I think you need a new mechanic.some sensor somewhere made that light turn on. Some major auto parts stores have free diagnostics.I'd check them out so you can go to a different garage well informed. I don't think the place you went wants to devote the time to solve your problem.
Better go to Advance Auto Parts store and have your car scanned for problems, and then code(s) erased. Disconnect the battery will also erase the code and make the check engine light off. But you don't get the code(s). Most often the light on indicates something wrong in the engine/emission control system. If they did not pass your car's emission test, they should give you a test result indicating the code(s) or reason. If the light were on for no reason, I am afraid you might have a malfunctional ECM (engine computer). Immediately after you have erased the code(s), you can not pass the emission test if it is 96 or later model. You need to drive it for some miles, say about 100 miles and then your car's emission control system will be READY for test. If the malfunction is caused by an oxigen sensor, most often, after about 20 miles, and before your car is ready for retest, the check engine light will be on again; if it is catalyst converter efficiency below threshold, also quite a lot, you can drive a few hundred miles before the light comes back. Hope can help a little more, Good Luck!
