Question:

Can you join pvc and copper pipe in order to add another water supply for a sink?

Trying to install a wash basin in the basement and trying to find the least expensive, but effective option.

Answer:

yes you can, and its simple.... the fittings are available at lowes or home depot....just ask for the compression type special fittings to adapt from copper to pvc or visa versa.....you will need a copper tubeing cutter if you dont have one and the rest is up to your skills of a home do it yourselfer at plumbing problems....or just ask for expert advise at the place where you get the parts, they usually have someone who has been there done that... you can do it they can help !!! so they say.......
only if you want a really bad plumbing job........that might work once........
You can not directly join the two as PVC uses a liquid welding type of gluing solution (actulally the PVC glue causes th material to melt and fuse together. Copper pipe is sodered together with heat. However you can put a facet (you probably allready have one) on the copper pipe and then put together a PVC section which simply screws onto the Copper fitting. Then use PVC for the rest of your plumbing solution. Go to you local home DIY store and they can help you Get er Done! Hope this helps! Peace.
yes you can use pvc and copper together. you need to install a threaded tee in the so you can connect the copper lin back, and to add a theaded end for the pvc pipe, then just use the recommended glue for the pvc, drains use pvc, water lines would be better using cpvc as they have a higher temperature and pressure rating. you can go to any hardware or building supply to get the materials. also, you may need to cut the pvc/cpvc to length from longer pieces so you should get a pvc cutter. for the larger diameters (above two inch) you can use a hack saw. just keep the cut as straight as possible. also, after making any cut, use either a knife blade, or sand paper to remove the sharp edges so the pieces join easier. make sure when you run the drain, you istall a p-trap and run the line slightly downhill from the sink end to the sewer or drain line where you tie it in. it helps prevent back-up and allows rthe water to drain completly and not sit in the line.
I wouldnt reccomend trying to bodge one with the other. I would use either or, not both. It is possible but the end result never lasts as long as if you had just used copper throughout. Copper is quite expensive at the moment. If you have a leak in the copper piping then the first thing you need to do is find out where its coming from. Once you have done that its quite easy to either replace that section or, if its a minor hole in the pipe, make good with some solder. Just dont forget to turn the water off before you start!! If your hole is too big then you can repair the broken part by buying 1) the length of copper you need 2) Two connecters, and 3) the solder to make the joins water tight. In my opinion you will find it much easier to replace the copper with copper rather than trying to botch iy up with upvc. Good Luck.
