Question:

can you lay carpet over tile?

we have about 500 sq feet of tile in our house and want to put carpet over it. the tile is not finished in the hallway tho, does that matter? and do you know an approximate cost for ripping the tile out? like $1,000+? $2,000+?thank you!

Answer:

Here's okorder /... Removing tile is a huge labor intensive messy job. I would also want to find alternatives. :-)
Ceramic tile? (As opposed to vinyl). If its ceramic, then it really isnt that hard to remove, and shouldnt be that expensive. Ask your carpet installer if he can do it. I had about 400 sq ft.of ceramic tile removed, and laminate flooring put down, and they did it all in one day. If you put carpet over ceramic tile, you will feel a lip where it is not finished. If its vinyl tile, then dont remove it - just go over it. The height difference would be negligible.
Yes it can be done if the tile is secure and not a beveled edged tile. Tack strips can be glued and screwed into the tile like a cement floor. The unfinished part will have to be filled in or at least brought up to be flush with the unfinished tile ( a few ways to do that.) To rip out tile , which is a labor intense job, I used to charge 2$ a s/f If you mean vinyl tile , all you need to do is treat the edges with a filler and lay carpet over it. Get some estimates and you can see what you want to do So you can get bids to have some one do it, do it yourself of fill in the last area. Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar .. GL
