Its pretty simple, but depending on how detailed you want to get this can be very extensive. There are several things to consider here. First, do you want to have levels of authorization? Another words do you want to have registered users, then moderators, then admins? Each role will have different levels of access and control and the further you go up the more broad reaching permissions the role will provide. Second, what controls do you want to limit to only the owner of the item (the user that created the post or that users settings, etc)? Once you have that figured out you do the following. If this is something that only the user that created it is allowed to do then you just check to see if the visitor is logged in and is the owner of the setting, post, etc. ?php if ($user $owner) //Allow whatever; ? If this is something that more advanced roles are allowed control of then check the role for permission. ?php if ($role-hasPermission($control)) //Then allow action ? What might be helpful to you is an authorization library. The first two links I list below go to such libraries. You may also want to look into a PHP framework, some of them come with such libraries built in. If you use the Zend Framework then its libraries can actually be used independently of the rest of the framework. That link is also below. If you are interested in frameworks I would recommend starting off with CodeIgniter because of its simple and thorough documentation and small learning curve (especially compared to all the others).
