as smoke rises putting them on the wall isn't really the right place for it . A thermal type detector would probably work all right on high on wall. Heat sets a thermal detector off opposed to smoke.
The ceiling is the best place because smoke rises, but I'm pretty sure I've seen detectors placed on walls near the ceiling. Read the instructions and ask your local fire marshal to be sure.

You can put them wherever you like but to be effective they must be at the highest part of the room, i.e. the ceiling. That is because smoke rises and needs to be detected as soon as possible for obvious reasons. If you fit them lower than that they may not react until it is too late.
