In the middle of summer, I usually do not wear gloves unless I'm mountain biking. I have my Salsa Woodchipper bars double-wrapped with bar tape and they are very comfortable. As the weather cools, I'm more likely to don the gloves. And of course in the winter, gloves are dern near mandatory.
Tom Only in the winter when it is cold. Then I put on a pair of cotton gloves with a grip surface on them. If I could fine the same in wool I use them. they would be warmer and wick any moisture. SOccerref

Last season I upgraded to a pair of hand stitched leather cycling gloves. They are the best cycling gloves I've ever had and feel great even in the 100 degree heat here. I think the most important thing about gloves is that they protect your hands when you fall. Sure, helmets are great, but getting your hands torn to shreds and smearing blood all over your bar tape is really the pits, So for me gloves are more than cosmetic or for looks, they are in part for safety.
