From my experience, these kinds of gardening concepts seem to be designed more for selling books than anything else. When I first started gardening, I was influenced by these kinds of things too (like bio-intensive gardening) but in the end a good garden only comes from understanding the plants that you are trying to grow and from experience. As for moisture retention; compost isn't intended to maintain moisture levels. You may want to try adding organic matter such as lawn clippings, or using an eco-friendly mulch of some sort. I would suggest taking some time to research gardening practices in Utah, perhaps joining forums where gardening issues specific to your state can be discussed.

I've read in some previous questions that you may have to tweak the soil mix, (peat, vermiculite, compost) but I'm not clear as to what changes would have to be made. We installed the system last year, so this is our second.
