Question:

Car problems, is it the cv joints or drive axle, or other?

My car has been making noises when I drive, especially when I turn. Its usually a scraping sound. Well today, I took a hard left, then a hard right. Afterwards I was unable to move the car. When I try to move the car, it makes alot of grinding and scraping noise. This car is a 1995 Mazda 626 v6, 176k MIles. And it‘s a manual. I think it‘s either the cv joints or drive axle. What do you guys think? by the way I had to walk home cause of the problem.

Answer:

the CV joints are considered the drive axles, but it really sounds like that is your problem, also was the sound more like a fast clicking sound if so that is definitely your problem . O K
The cv-joint is on the end of the axle, there sold as one piece, you can usually tell which side is bad because the rubber boot will be busted on the bad one .You should buy a repair manual fir your vehicle if your going to be doing the work yourself, you can get one at any auto parts store for around $30. bucks.
The axles on a front wheel drive car are like one foot long, so not much to mess with. The CV joints, on the other hand, are a wear part. My $$$ is on the CV joints. The only time I ever saw a front wheel drive axle go without a CV joint going first was in a drag racing car with too much torque front drive slicks - Just twisted one axle like a pretzel
