Question:

Carbon monoxide poisoned while pregnant?

We had gas heat in our home and one day it just stopped working. We turned the gas up all the way and opened all the vents thinking maybe it would cut back on. I went to work while this happened but my sister in law and my one year old daughter were at home. When my husband came home around 6pm he cut the whole system off and we just left heaters on.The guy came out to look at the gas and he said that something was cracked and forcing carbon monoxide through the house. I am 8 months pregnant and I haven't had any symptoms neither have my daughter, husband, or sister in law and the gas guy didn't seem concerned. Just wondering if theres any way that we could have had high exposure and if so should we seek treatment? Our landlord doesn't have carbon monoxide detectors in the house and we called him when we first started having the problems and he still hasn't called us back.

Answer:

Yes. My friend, a sound and lighting engineer, says it has happened to him. It ruined a stage production when the alarms went off and the sprinkler system kicked on. Whenever he uses smoke in a public building (same class of stuff you use), he calls the local fire department to get the necessary permits and permissions to temporarily shut off the smoke detectors. Of the situation I mentioned above, his assistant failed to contact the fire department that time, so now he does it himself everytime. .
If you're talking about the stuff that smells like pina colladas, then no, I don't think so - more of a cold, damp fog than smoke anyhow :)
