Question:

Carolina Storm Wheel Health Concerns?

I just got a hedgehog a week ago today and in preparation of getting him, of course I got him a wheel. I did some research in order to find a suitable wheel, one with a flat surface and was quiet. I stumbled across the Storm Wheel. When I picked up my hedgehog, my breeder asked me about my wheel so i told her about the Storm Wheel. She was really really against it for some reason and told me that they were health risks and could take off a leg. She told me that this is what her vet told her and so I immediately bought a Wodent Wheel from her store. This wheel is also very quiet but unfortunately the poop gets trapped inside there and just makes a giant rattle. Is the CSW a health risk because I see and read just about everyone having them. I want to use it because the poop won‘t get trapped and also its silent.

In 15 years of taking care of hedgehogs, I've never heard about bucket wheels such as the CSW taking off a leg and I'm surprised to hear that the source of that information is a vet. Perhaps the vet blamed the wheel for what something else in a hedgehog's cage did, or was given bad information by the hedgehog's owner when they took it in? I don't know. There are some wheels that are indeed dangerous for hedgehogs, but bucket wheels aren't one that I've heard of being so. I guess any wheel could be a danger if it wasn't maintained properly (making sure the bucket was securely attached to the frame at all times, that the frame was solid and not prone to tilting suddenly, etc.) The only main concern with bucket wheels is making sure the angle the running surface is at is just slightly tilted towards the front (the open part of the bucket) to let urine drain off if the hedgehog pees on the wheel. Bucket wheels are pretty easy to clean if you spray them with cold water and then let them sit for 15 minutes or so.
