How do I avoid over-charge by the carpet company as a reuslt of over-measure the room size? I have two rooms, room I is 10'6'' by 29'2quot;. Room II size is 11'8quot; by 12' 10quot;, with a closet size 7' by 2'4quot;. The carpet comes in width of 12'. How many sq ft do I need to order the carpet for room I and room II? For room I, the carpet size, without adding any buffer space for edge trimming, is 12' * 29'2quot; = 356 sq ft. For room II, the carpet size, without adding any buffer space for edge trimming, is 12' * 12'10quot; = 154 sq ft. The room II closet is 12 * 2'4'' = 28 sq ft. How many add'l sq ft do I need to add to allow buffer for trimming in each room? ThanksSM
major is right with the sf of carpet. about 60 sq yards of carpet.. thing about the closet is carpet is laid one way. if you reverse or 1/4 turn it you will see the seams. if the closet is at the end of the long run.. no big deal. if its on one of the sides then you order enough carpet to basicly seam in 1/2 (2 pieces) for the carpet.. if you want it to look best then go with no seam and order the piece the size of the closet running the same way as the room carpet.
This seems a bit like basic math so let's see where this goes, and hope it can help ya along the way. (I'm converting it all to inches) Room #1 : 10'6 X 29'2 126 X 350 44,100 Room #2: 11'8 X 12'10 140 X 154 21,560 Closet #1: 7' X 2'4 84 X 28 2,352 Total area = 44,100 21,560 2,352 Total = 68,012 one sq foot is 12 X 12 = 144 So.... 68012/144 = 473 sq. ft. If we assume a standard 12' width for our sq ft then we need a length of: 473/12= 39.4 feet and this would be Best Case Scenario To figure your Worst Case Scenario you could just assume you'll be using the width of 12 feet for each cut ( room) and just pull off of the roll the length you need to do the whole room. This means, we only need to add the lengths to figure how many feet pulled off of the rolls we require. 29'2 + 12'10 + 2'4 350 + 154 + 28 = 532 44.3 feet pulled off the rolls.
It depends on which wall the closet is on as far as the run if it needs a seam or not. Basically for the 2 rooms you need approx 504 sf (12 x 42) plus the closet which will be 12 x 2.5 or 30 sf. This is approx, but you can't get carpet that exact simply because it comes in 12' width's. So you are looking at 534 or 535 sf. As the guy says below, you can figure on about a 5% waste factor.
I spent 3 years being a flooring specialist and the carpet company should be willing to sit down with you and show you the different ways you can place your carpet. You will be purchasing the entire width x the length you need. Seeing how both of your rooms will work with a 12' carpet seeming shouldn't be a question. Seams at closet doors are common and acceptable. In general you can figure about a 5 to 10% waste-in your case 5% probably is more than adequate. There isn't a whole lot of extra needed for trimming purposes because carpet is streched when it is installed. I don't think I have ever sold more than one linear foot of extra unless there are doorways or seriously uneven walls to consider. Home Depot and Lowes will give you a copy of their measure and cut sheet as do most carpet companies. If they aren't willing to show you exactly what you are buying-don't buy.
