in a car and what is it used for?how do you fix this?
The axle is what holds the wheels on the vehicle. And if you don't know what it is, you DANG sure can't replace it.
It is what is hooked to the wheels and turns them. If it's bad you replace it.
on a front wheel drive, the axle is the round looking bar with a rubber boot on both ends that goes from the side of the engine/transmission into the side of the wheel under the car called the hub. Note:both sides of the car have it. the engine is running, transmission is put into gear by you, it then turns the gears, clutch pack and rotates those round looking bars with boots on them in the direction of the gear you selected. reverse or drive. depending on what happened that you want to know how to fix it, well a garage will have to do whatever work you are talking about. if its a rear wheel drive with a straight axle, meaning one solid bar across the underside of the vechicle connecting both wheels and a big round thing in the middle, called the rear end or banjo housing, it has gears inside it, and the axle itself is inside that whole part that connects the wheels together. the smooth part on the outside of the rear end. when you pull a wheel off of the rear, and pull the axle out, its connected to the hub on the rear as well, it is a long looking bar with lines in it. take an ink pink. lay it cross-way on a table, then draw an inmaginary line from one side to the other, or top to bottom, then do it again just a bit past that line, and go all the way around drawing those lines from top to bottom, put grooves between them, and you have an axle for a straight axle rear end. an independent rear end set up the same as front wheel drive with axles connecting to wheels and the rear end in the middle. look at a honda ridgeline, independent rear suspension, look at a tundra, straight axle. for an easier visual of a straight axle rear end, take two pens, lay cross ways on the table, put a small ball in the middle, pen ball pen: remember, pens lay in same direction. two pens must touch the ball in order for you to see what I mean. hope this helps, sorry its so long, God Bless.
