Answer:

Metal about the Viking Age.
Viking metal is a subgenre of heavy metal music characterized by its galloping pace, keyboard-rich anthemic sound, bleakness and dramatic emphasis on lyrical themes of Norse mythology, Norse paganism, and the Viking Age. In most cases the Viking-themed metal consists of any combination of black and folk metal. Viking metal is noisy, chaotic, and often augmented by sorrowful keyboard melodies. Like folk metal bands, Viking metal acts generally utilize some acoustic and other unusual instruments in addition to the traditional metal instruments. Vocal techniques often incorporate clean singing in addition to the typical black metal screams and growls. Thematically, Viking metal draws extensively on elements of black metal, but uses pagan and Norse lyrics and imagery instead of those of an anti-Christian or Satanic nature.
A sub genre of black metal with strong roots in Scandinavian countries such as Norway, Sweden and Finland. It is similar to folk metal in the aspect that it heavily utilizes melody combined with instruments such as the accordion, pan flute and harp, along with deep operatic backing vocals to achieve a medieval atmosphere. Lyrical content deals with Norse mythology, Norse paganism, and the Viking Age.
Viking metal is a sub-genre of Black metal, and people already talked about the lyrics. But I just wanted to point out that, yes, Amon Amarth (my favorite band if I must add) does sing about vikings and has lyrics about Norse paganism and mythology, but I though I would just state that even the band members don't consider themselves viking metal. So in my opinion, I just call them Melodic Death metal, but everyone has different opinions.
Viking metal is sort of a lyrical genre, as in the term viking metal doesnt really describe the music, but instead the lyrics. Viking metal bands are typically melodic death metal bands, such as Amon Amarth, or folk metal bands. A lot of artists sort of combine the two and basically play melodic death metal with some folk instrumentation, like Ensiferum or Suidakra. You mentioned pagan and black metal so i think i should bring this next piece of information up too. Lots of folk metal bands, such as Finntroll, combine black metal vocals with folk metal instrumentation. These bands are still called folk metal bands, but sometimes they will just be called pagan metal. While not an official genre, that term is still often used to describe bands such as Finntroll, Wolfchant, Kampfar, etc
