Question:

Converting through axle hubs to standard quick release?

What is required to convert a through axel wheel hub to a standard quick release hub. I bought some new wheels and they came with the wrong front hub. I got a good deal on the wheels and I am wondering what is involved in changing them over. My fork doesn‘t support through axles. Thanks in advance.

Answer:

All you really need is a quick release axle and the quick release skewer. Make sure that the new axle is the same diameter and thread pitch as the old one. It needs to be long enough that the axle will go the length of most of the dropout. Then just take the parts off the old axle and put them in the same order on the new axle.
if you got the tools then yes its just a matter of replacing hollow QR hub for solid axle, its more difficult if rear as you will need to remove cassette, its also a good time to look at quality of bearings and re-grease
To my knowledge, thru-axle hubs can not be fitted to a standard quick release style forks. With a traditional quick release style hub, the hub itself actually rests in the dropouts of the fork and is in no way supported by the quick release skewer. The purpose of the skewer is to simply clamp the legs of the fork to the hub. With thru-axle hubs, the wheels ARE supported by the skewer/bar which comes included with thru-axle forks. If you were to use a thru-axle hub on a quick release fork, all the weight would be supported by the skewer. The skewers and dropouts were not designed for this. If you want to use your new wheel, you will need to switch over to a new fork. I suggest returning the wheel and getting one which was designed for your fork style.
