Question:

Copper IUD vs Mirena?

I had a copper IUD for 5-6 years. My periods were long, HEAVY and painful. I had the IUD removed and been on Yaz for 7 months. I don't like having to remember a pill everyday. I've been considering Mirena. I like to convenience of the IUD, but the light periods from the pill, and not having to pay every month. I've heard Mirena helps lighten periods. Can anyone give Mirena users give me their opinions.

Answer:

Yes, I had Mirena for 2 years. Mirena also releases a small amount of hormones, so it does not act like the copper IUD. I had a light period for about 6 weeks when they first put it in, with some light cramping, but after that I pretty much didn't have a period again. Sometimes some light spotting around the time I would have had my period. No period cramping, no PMS, etc. It was nice. I eventally had it removed, though, because I was getting some other types of cramping (like the kind you get with iron supplements), and it aggrivated my intersticial cystitis. If you don't have IC, then I highly recommend. I've heard it's much better than the copper IUD. It has to be replaced more, though (4-5 years instead of 7-9).
