Question:

copper stripping for moss removal, is it still effective when it turns green?

I want to safely get the moss off my roof and keep it off. I hear about copper strips or wire, but also read that once the copper turns green, it loses its effectiveness. is this true? Also don't want to use chemicals because of plants on the ground, any suggestions? I do have a pressure washer and thought of using it, low pressure and making sure not to spray against the shingles.

Answer:

The green is copper oxide and yes it still works when green. Zinc is for cathodic corrosion resistance not for anti-biotic properties, it's the copper that kills the moss. The green copper should actually work better as it's leaching more copper. You don't want the zinc, it would keep the copper from leaching out. You put the copper strips as high up on the roof as possible ie.: along the ridge, so that the copper leaches down over the entire roof. It stops working when the copper is all gone but that should several hundred years from now.
Yes, it loses it's effectiveness.for keeping moss or mold. The green is a protective coating for to he copper.
It's not copper that gets rid of moss it's Zinc
Ferrous sulphate solution is what you want.
