My parents just bought new tires and they were aired up to 28, the amount listed on the car door. My husband had a fit when he checked them after they got home and he aired them on up to 45, the amount listed on the tire sidewall. Which is correct? The tires were bought at a national tire seller, so I assume they know what they're doing but all 4 were right at 28, not 45 as listed on the tire. Is anyone out there a tire expert and know how much air should be in a tire?
The tire pressures on the decal in the vehicle door jamb is the correct value to follow. The pressures that are molded into the sidewall of the tire are generally the maximum air pressure rating that the tire can safely handle without the tire "blowing apart". The tire pressures in the door jamb decals allow the vehicle to have a proper amount of tire tread to be in contact with the road for the weight and payload of the vehicle to safely grip the road around turns, acceleration, and braking. If the tires are over inflated, (although it reduces rolling resistance and improves fuel economy), tires will wear improperly, tire traction is reduced (causing slipping when gripping is desired --ie. being stuck in mud, sand, slipping while braking on wet or snow covered roads, etc), ride comfort is reduced and more road imperfections are felt from the road and through the vehicle's suspension. Overall, follow the door jamb decals unless the door jamb decal has a higher number than what is rated on the tire... for your safety and mine. Best of luck and happy motoring
Could you advise the what is the correct tire pressure for 19 inch Rim? The Tire size is 275/30/19.
The correct pressure is the one on the car door. The pressure on the tire is the max that the tire can be inflated to.The tire shop knows what type tire that your car needs and that is what they gave you and the folks that made the car know what tire pressure the car needs to get the best performance also if you have the owners manual that came with the car it will also give you the correct pressure and I am certain that it is not 45.Most passenger cars tire pressure is ususlly some where between 28 and 32 PSI.Your husband is wrong
Your husband is wrong. 28 is the vehicle manufacturers recommendation based on the load of the vehicle (some cars weigh more some less). The 45 on the sidewall is the maximum the tire can sustain; that's the worst possible thing you can do with tires. Overinflation can cause blowouts and also make it easier to puncture tires. The highest inflation psi on your vehicle should be around 30 at an overinflated psi (for better HIGHWAY driving mileage).
