Question:

Dangers of Old Tires?

I know how to check my tires to see how old they are but how long is the shelf life of the tire? Does it vary from manufacturer to manufacturer? Does the quality of the tire make a difference? $75 tire VS $150 tire?

Answer:

Most of the time the more expensive tires have better rubber compound for more traction and longer life. Good Luck...
There is a shelf life but they don't really say what it is, rubber becomes brittle with age, if there is any signs of cracking or the rubber feels particular hard i would replace them. I had that problem with tyres on an old BSA motorcycle!!!
Experts warn that tires more than six years old can fail catastrophically and yes the quality varies from each manufacturer............. A $75.00 tire made by a brand name company can be better than a $150.00 tire made by some off brand company.
Your higher end tires $150+ have better rubber and normally have more steel belts in the side walls. Most tires are sold long before a self life comes into play. The sun beating down on tires all day long is the biggest factor and quickest way for tires to go bad. Most vehicles this is not a problem since the tires are in and out of direct sun. Tires on trailers that just set for days, months this would play a big factor.
With tires, you do get what you pay for. I always spent the most money I could afford on tires and shocks. If the tires are old, say older than 10 years, examine them for drying out and excessive wear. I would refrain from high speeds as the excessive heat can result in a possible blowout. Recently, news reports told us that some tires in the warehouses from years ago were displaying symptoms of dry rot ON THE SHELF!. Check with the specific manufacturer by e mail or regular mail (so you have documentation should the need arise). Good luck
