Marble is a rock that is metamorphosed limestone. Quartz is a silicate mineral.
Marble is typically composed dominantly of calcium carbonate. Quartz is SiO2. Quartz is harder than calcite. Steel will easily scratch marble but not quartz. The minerals also differ in form, and carbonate reacts with acid, whereas quartz does not. Although both calcite (the common form of calcium carbonate) and quartz are common minerals, they are relatively easy to distinguish, even visually, once you get used to their appearance.
