Question:

do i have to buy new controls if i change outboards?

i have a 1988 johnson and would like to replace with 2006 mercury.

Answer:

Nope. You will need to get Mercury controls. Talk this over with whoever you are purchasing the motor from. If this is coming from a dealer, ask about used controls, or a discount on new.
In most cases at a minimum you will need new control cables , and in all cases new electrical cable. That leaves the shifter itself. Depending on the boat manufacturer, you might have a Morse shifter, so you can use that. But if you have a OMC shift box, just get the merc. one.
yes, to the question and would you like to sell the johnson cheap? bottom dollar let me know
The controls should work ok on any motor. You will probably need to adjust the cables to fit properly
