Some do. It is a personal choice. Since they know the parts down there pretty well, it is pretty common for them to do abortions as well. :(
No health care professional is required to perform any non-essential procedure. This is simply interpreted, if it is not a life or death situation docs can do (or not do) what ever they are comfortable with and capable of safely performing. You only need to be an MD to perform abortions. At the hospital where I work I only know of one (out of about 30) OB/GYN who will perform abortions and this doc will only do it in the case of abuse or documented rape. Most of them will perform therapeutic abortions but they are very strict on what they consider therapeutic. Abortionists typically work in a place that is a private clinic and this is pretty much all they do. Good luck in your decision and you should also know when you do your residency that if you are at a Catholic hospital you will not have to even assist in these as they do not do them at all. At any other hospital you may have to in order to pass a class. The draw back to a Catholic hospital is most do not allow dispensing of birth control of any kind which can increase the incidence of abortion.
