Question:

Do rear axles/tires have CV boots?

I‘ve had to replace CV boots on previous vehicles in my past. I remember the clicking sound that it created when I made a right/left turn. In the past, that was my front wheels/axle.Now, this week, while I‘m making a left turn (with my current vehicle), I hear an almost similar sound coming from my right rear wheel/tire/axle. Do rear axles/tires have CV boots as well? When I make a right turn, no sounds. Only when I make a left turn, but when I go rather slow on my left turns, I hear nothing, only when I‘m going at the higher speeds do I hear this clicking sounds, I‘m guessing it‘s because of the higher speeds, the higher torque. Any mechanics out there, what does this sound like? And yes, I am bringing it in ASAP, was just wondering if anyone out there recognize this sound, or does it sound like CV boot?

Answer:

yes cars can have rear CV axles. I have seen many all-wheel drive vehicles that have 4 CV axles.
Uhmyou didnt tell us your vehical details. Year , Make , Model , Engine liters (size) Some cars do have whats called a wishbone suspension in the rear. Wish bone suspensions have 2 axle shafts coming out the rear end chunk (differential gear)they are similar to a CV axlesthey have 2 boot covered joints on either end. Most wish bone suspensions are either going to be found on a rear wheel drive car .or an all wheel drive model . You cant tell just by looking under the car.It will look like 2 small drive shafts going to each rear wheel . If your car is front wheel drive .you most likely have a rear brake pad sitting loose and it's clicking against the rotor a bit. Or maybe a strut tower or wheel hub is worn.
if it is equipped with an irs, it can have a cv joint but if it is a solid rear differential then no it will not. on the car that i was working on earlier today, it had a chirp from the rear brakes under a load, i think that it has brake issues, you just might have the same thing.
