Advantages: You keep track of different versions and history of it, you can also keep track of changes between different versions. Other people using the same version control system who have access to the same files as you, can benefit from seeing which is the most up-to-date version. Also only one person can check out a file at a time, which avoids the scenario of making different changes by different people to the same document version. Disadvantages: hmm I can't really think of any.
