Question:

do you have to take wheels off to replace a cv axle?

i just had a cv axle replaced about 2 weeks ago because my car was making that horrible clicking noise while turning. today im stopped at a red light, light turns green and i go like usual and a wheel COMES OFF while im in motion. 2 of the 5 bolts are broken off and 3 of the 5 lugs and the 2 bolts are missing. each wheel has a locking lug.that lug is also missing. no wheels or lugs to my knowledge were tampered with since i got the car out of the shop. this shop has a policy that the car be returned in about 10 days so they can do a check up to make sure whatever they fixed is ok so when i returned for this check up i was told (not in a mean way) to come back next week, we‘re too busy. this would have been the week to return it. what should i do as far as insurance and confronting them about this? i dont know anything about cars and i‘m sure they‘ll try to get over on me

Answer:

Yes, the wheel was removed, then the brake saddle was removed, then the brake disc was pulled, then the front suspension was partially disassembled, then the half shaft was pulled. Probably the tech didn't fully seat the disc at reassembly, and as it seated itself, the lugs were left loose. Call your car insurance company, and have them contact the shop. Also find a different mechanic. you could have been killed if this had happened on a freeway curve.
Yes, the wheel has to come off. I don't know what state you're from, but here in PA that shop is LIABLE for any repairs that were caused by the wheel coming off since they were the last people to take it off and put it back on.
Do you have to take wheels off to replace a cv axle? at least to have more room to work. and the knuckle assembly weighing less w/o a tire, is easier to swing out of the way and support. weather or not anything more than say a lower controller arm or support arm for the hub needs to be removed to swing the knuckle/spindle out of the way during extraction depends on the platform. sounds like they simply didn't torque the lug nuts properly. that's purdy much the only way the lug nut studs get sheared.
i know they make a bunch of brands of iron cleaner. you use it when its hot. im not sure a recipe though
Find a genius, and ask them!!!
