I've heard that some rats like them and others dont, so I'm just curious what your personal experiences are with rats running on wheels.
My rats used it more when they were younger. Now they're a few months old, they get on, go a little, and get bored. Sometimes I see a rat grooming or just lazing on the wheel.maybe they like the swaying. Not much running going on though, they'd much rather come out and explore.
Male or female, I have yet to have a rat that liked their wheel. The most I got one to do was sit on the outside top of the wheel when he was young, or another one when very young would go to sleep in the wheel - but none of mine have ever run in the wheel.
It really depends on the rat. Some like the wheels and some dont. My 2 male rats couldnt be bothered with the wheel I put in their cage. They sniff it every once in a while, but thats about it. They'd rather come out of their cage and run on the floor. As C mentioned, the younger a rat is exposed to a wheel, the more likely they are to use them. Its more difficult to get an adult rat to start using one.
