single station is just that, one alarm for a given area. not linked to any others. yours seem to be linked, or they are intended to be. hook each color wire to it's same color house wiring. if they do not all sound at the same time when one is triggered, you have a bad connection somewhere, probably on the red line. if they are wired correctly, the black wire is hot, to power the alarms. the white is neutral, to complete the circuit. the red only becomes hot when one detector is triggered and that detector sends power to the others so all of them will warn at the same time, instead of waiting for the smoke to fill the spaces and travel to other areas to activate the other alarms itself. that reduces the time you have to escape drastically! check the connections at all alarms and get them working together when one is set off. and get some earplugs before you start testing, it doesn't take long to get tired of the noise! :)
It doesn't matter either way. Fired/resigned are more designations between the employer and employee. If someone called him as a reference, he might say you quit or he might say he fired you (if he has a grudge). It seems to me though, that you quit since he assumed you would take the hours (and he said so you're just going to quit?) Basically, I wouldn't use him as a reference for future employment.
If the system is setup to receive traffic from general public, I guess you can.
