Question:

Does pet goldfishes need light?

for example, guppies need about 8 hours of light. do goldfishes need light?

Answer:

Have you ever tried staying in a dark room for 24 hours, you start to feel not so hot. Yes Goldfish need light, all fish need day and night cycles. Pretty much every living thing on the face of the earth minus cave dwelling and deep ocean dwelling things need day and night cycles. Ever heard of SAD? All fish need the majority of light to come from the top as a sideways sun is unnatural. A bright room with an uncovered tank will be sufficient otherwise you need an aquarium light for 8-12 hours a day.
Hey Jessica. Goldfish do need light. It varies on how much they need. Don't turn on the light, keep that off to save power. Place to tank or bowl near a window to let some light on it. But be careful if it's really hot where you are, you don't want to heat the water up. If a goldfish is in darkness for more than 24 hours they turn white. Also, a goldfish only have the memory of 10 seconds. :) few facts lol.
They don't NEED it, but it helps them relax more in the environment, more natural. Just turn the light on when you wake up, turn it off when you go to bed. About 12 hours of each, just like it would be if they weren't in a tank
room light / indirect sunlight is fine I dont think any fish needs a tank light. But you need a tank light if you want plants EDIT: Rohn I have had multiple tanks (up to 7) and only one of my tanks has a light for the plants. The fish seem fine. If they act fine and seem fine then how could you work out that they need a tank light. They sleep when its dark and swim when its day. YOU DONT NEED A LIGHT
All fish need about 8 to 10 hours of light per day to simulate their natural environment. Ambient light in the room is just not strong enough unless the tank is in direct sunlight. In which case you will have algae problem. -rds
