Pretty much the coolness of the USA in the 1950's came about because the rest of the industrial western world was totally trashed from World War II. Almost all of Europe and Asia's industrial centers were blown'ed up real good! and nothing could be imported into the USA since they couldn't make anything. To top that off, you have millions of American troops coming back with jobs and money to spend in their now civilian lives. The only place that goods could be made was in the domestic USA. There was also no one to else to follow as far as style or technique goes since the best foreign engineering and fashion design minds were dead. Put this all together: the need for consumer products (clothes, cars, food, you name it), a bunch of Americans that just made stuff out of their own imaginations to satisfy needs, a very low tax base and the American free enterprise system, you have a golden age where no one outside the USA influenced the American culture. Americans finally had the chance to define themselves. For those who say America needs the rest of the world, look at the 1950's. If ever in the future some World Union tries to blockade the States into submission, it will be our finest hour.

Cleaning the ducts will improve air quality and allow the air to move through the system easier. If you are have turned up the heat on your thermostat and are not getting enough heat, I would recommend you contact a reputable heating contractor in your area. Hope that helps. As for the smoke detector, try another battery. Ensure it is fully charged. If you have reset the alarm, tried a new battery and are still having problems, consider replacing the unit.
