I never lived in an apartment that furnished fire extinguishers , It is a good idea to have one as well as a smoke detector which is required by law. Your best bet is to purchase one , Then you will Always have one that belongs to you,and you can take it with you when you leave or move to a different apartment. Make sure the batteries in the smoke detector are changed every year, Dead batteries don't work.
ANYTHING that causes smoke will set off a detector. They're made with Americium, a radioactive material that has the particles that it emits radiation between two electrodes. When smoke gets into the detector, it interrupts the flow of particles and sets it off. Probably best not to mess around with it.
