Every electron, on account of its spin, is a small magnet. In most materials, the countless electrons have randomly oriented spins, leaving no magnetic effect on average. However, in a magnetic mateiral, many of the electron spins are aligned in the same direction, so they act cooperatively, creating a net magnetic field.

I bet you have the same sealed auto transmission my daughter's 2004 Classic has. There is no dipstick and the fluid is not meant to be disturbed until it is changed. It is just like a manual gearbox; drain on the bottom and fill plug on the side. No dipstick. The owner's manual should clear this up for sure.
