Destitution and famine were widespread in Ireland during the 1820's in what is now called the potatoe famine. In order to escape this fate, many Irish immigrated to the United States, and other countries, to seek refuge. Seperately, Ireland has had much religious conflict for the past couple centuries. Specifically, this conflict was a result of English (and Protestant) occupation of Ireland. As the Irish have faced much oppression for being Catholic, at the hand of the British, they have since developed quite an antagonistic relationship. Hope that helps.
