I have a box turtle, and I want to change the substrate I use. WHat should I use? I want it to be pretty cheap because he loves to dig, so it has to be deep, and I have a TON of floor area to cover. Thanks!
This not a recommended practice as vermiculite can hold moisture. Installing another type of insulation instead of more vermiculite could be a problem. Modern vermiculite is less likely to have asbestos in any great quantity. The proper installation of this product is to install a vapor barrier first then the vermiculite. It might be worthwhile to remove the existing insulation and use a newer blow in product or batts of unbacked fiberglass.
The vermiculite will only have a very small chance of having asbestos in it. typically the suspect vermiculite came from one area in Montana and was a very small portion of the total amount mined. as for laying insulation on top of the vermiculite -- yeah, no problem in doing that.
I spray all my insulation in. It's quicker and a whole lot easier. If your doing this in your attic they recommend about 24 inches.
