Question:

Going from 170cc scooter to a 200cc motorcycle?

Considered enough of an upgrade? I been riding this scooter for 14 months now and I want to move up to something faster, I‘m not looking to go 100 or even 70 mph, I‘m just tired of accelerating so slowly. So would a 200cc motorcycle be enough? Or should I bump up higher? I‘m planning on going for motorcycle lessons because I fear I may have gotten too used to not changing gears.thank you.

Answer:

You don't say how old you are or what licence you have etc. But if you have a full motorcycle licence I would go for refresher course on a geared bike and look at something like an ER-6f which is a 650cc bike will do about 130mph flat out but is built for town riding and easy first big bike characteristics. A 170 to a 200 isn't going to make that much difference, if you are ready for a bigger bike go for it. Just get all the gear to go with it too. Remember most new riders will drop/fall from their bike within the first year.
Over a year of riding what is in US legally a motorcycle- over 150cc- and just worried about gears? Go for it, but what 200cc cycle are you thinking about? If you're planning any highway travel- maybe a 250cc like Honda Rebel or Kaw Ninja- about only thing available that size in US for street. Student couple years back did basics on a little 50cc scooter- after passing written test for permit did most of riding on CM400 honda that could keep up with highway traffic 55 to 65 mph. Make sure of fit of cycle- can you get both heels on ground while seated? Suzuki makes a nice light single based on old Savage- S40 and 650 versions in cruiser style. Gears are not big problems as compared to traffic awareness- and 14 months of riding will have taught you how to survive 4 wheeled distracted drivers. Cost is cheaper for used cycles, Ninjas and rebels are the basic riders for many for a couple years then come on market when a 500c on up upgrade is considered - often good deals for next relatively new rider. Scooters- Honda made Helix? in 250cc, Suzuki made 400cc Burgman, Kymco has a 250cc and Tomos also- 300cc model also in couple and price is a little better than the Japanese models, quality is about as good, parts available at scooter shops- slightly less available than the Japanese models that have many more motorcycle dealers that can also get the scooter parts.
You'll need more like a 250 improve acceleration a little. If you're buying new, just visit a showroom and try some out, in different sizes if you like a 300-350, try the 400-450, but don't buy a 200 because it's quicker than the 170 only to find out it's still not quick enuf. Gear shifting is EASY and fun.
