Question:

GPS Systems.?

i am thinking about buying a gps system for my parents. what is some general information i need to know about. After i buy it, is there a monthly fee?Do they need to be wired into the car?

Answer:

no monthly fee, and they dont need to be wired in just cigarette lighter plug in. there are optional monthly things u can pay for like traffic and speed camera updates, some satnavs like the tomtom traffic range come with a year free subscribtion, TomTom have the easiest menus, and all satnavs have map updates via manufactuerers website.
There is no fee to use a gps, the government spent tax dollars to put the satellites up in space and to maintain the system so basically you already paid for the service all you need is the receiver (GPS unit) . the power cord only needs to plug into the cigarette lighter or just on the battery's if you don't want to use the lighter . It would depend on what they use the gps for, I assume auto navigation. Garmin makes the best gps systems (receivers) on the market that were the first to make GPS for the general public after the military declassified it. I have the 260w it has a lot of features for the money. (nüvi 260W comes ready to go right out of the box with preloaded City Navigator NT street maps, including a hefty points of interest (POIs) database with hotels, restaurants, fuel, ATMs and more. It even announces the name of exits and streets so you never have to take your eyes off the road. Simply touch the color screen to enter a destination, and nüvi takes you there with 2D or 3D maps and turn-by-turn voice directions. In addition, nüvi 260W accepts custom points of interest (POIs), such as school zones and safety cameras and lets you set proximity alerts to warn you of upcoming POIs.) Like all the NUVi's it just unclips and you can put it in your shirt pocket and take it with you on foot. Good luck
