A hardwire system usually uses a 3 wire connection and they use their own proprietary way of setting off all detectors if just one goes off. Typically, you wouldn't be able to connect a different brand detector to your present system. You can hook it up as a stand alone detector. First alert may offer a smoke/carbon monoxide detector for their system. Hope this helps.
