Question:

Harley Running Lights?

I want to add some lights to my bike to help with both night time visibility as well as day time boneheads pulling out from side roads who can't see me. I want to add two running lights up front, and two running lights in back for those women who like to do their nails while driving and may not notice I'm stopped at a red light. Will the 2004 Fatboy charging system handle the extra lights? I saw these blue bullet foglight type lights at AutoZone for like 20 bucks a set.

The system will handle the load. I got one of those HD plug-ins back in '06 when the bike was new. I intended just to get the added brake lights, but grabbed the only (and wrong one) from the shelf and got the one for turn/brake/running lights. It failed one day after the one year warranty expired. Other than my preference for red lens turn signals, it made NO difference to traffic behind me. Your mirrors and brains are still your best protection. For front lights, you just ought to get some that help YOU see better. Too much light is worse than one or none. I'm personally against that stupid '70s law that made us keep lights on at all hours. I find that drivers who see one light get confused and either gravitate towards it or climb the shoulder. Added to this confusion is the FACT that a bright light creates a fuzzy effect that blurs the outline of the bike and rider. Most current riders don't consider or understand this. Many run their high beam during the day, without realizing that it still blinds drivers. There is nothing worse than a blind car coming at you.
These guys are right about cheap crap from Autozone and places like that. All that sh** comes outta China and Taiwan and is a waste of money. Even though I don't own a Harley, if I did, I'd go with genuine HD parts, stuff that's not gonna make my ride look amateurish or possibly void any warranty that's in effect. As for other drivers seeing you, no, don't count on lights, vests, high-visiblity junk of any kind. You have to drive for them, so they can have time to text and eat and booger their nose or whatever. You ride and avoid. The three things that will keep you alive on a bike: Proper use of brakes, ability to properly and quickly swerve the bike, and your own judgement. Shiny side up, Dude!
Your charging system will have no problems at all running a few extra lights that are designed for motorcycles, especially leds, they are very low current draw lights....but remember those Auto Zone lights are designed for cars, and no one here can tell you what their current draw is, they are also cheap, low quality lights and you get what you pay for. You have a Harley, a high end bike, why butcher it up with cheap crap when there are HUNDREDS of quality options out there designed specifically for what you are wanting....DO IT PROPERLY, do it right the first time and you won't have to do it again and again and again. There are plenty of companies making bolt-on light bars for the front and you can get a Badlands module that will turn your rear turn signals into running and brake lights and led conversion kits for the stock bulbs.
